The Protein and Enzyme Engineering Laboratory

Laboratory area of interest: studying the structural and functional relationships of enzymes and proteins involved in the breakdown of biomass and other natural polymers.

We are exploring the possibility of using cellulose as an environmentally friendly energy source.

However, this is a challenging problem because of the extreme resistance of the molecule to hydrolysis.

Our laboratory is therefore engaged in identifying and elucidating the microbial and enzymatic processes responsible for the breakdown of the plant cell wall and how these systems can be used for biotechnological applications.
